Sychar Sterling loves the taste of victory in championship games.
He’s been in a few of those as a member of the New Haven High School boys’ basketball team.
So he also knows there are moments when it is necessary to step up and deliver in those big games.

The senior finished four assists shy of a triple-double as he scored a game-high 19 points while pulling down 16 rebounds to lead New Haven to a 70-57 win over South Lake in the championship game of the Rockets’ Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Trailing the Cavaliers 45-44 late in the third quarter, Brandyn Gonzales chimed in with his only points of the game – a 3-pointer that put New Haven ahead for the rest of the evening. It was one of 10 3-pointers that the Rockets drained in the contest.

But before South Lake could get the ball to its end of the floor, the Cavs’ Justin Navarra threw an errant pass that the Rockets’ Sychar Sterling intercepted and turned into a thunderous dunk that rocked everyone in the building.

It was two of his 15 second-half points as the Rockets grabbed a 49-45 lead.

“I felt like we came out in the third quarter kind of flat. We needed something to bring us up and I guess that was it,” Sterling said of his monster jam.

He later sank a trey of his own and dished the ball to Jyaire Mack underneath the basket for a layup that allowed New Haven (4-0) to close out the quarter on a 9-2 run.

“He has been a leader, a tough player and he’s got ice in his veins,” Rockets’ coach Tedaro France II said. “He’s not afraid to take a big shot.”

It was hard to watch for South Lake coach Kurt Wilson Sr. He watched his team battle back from a 35-29 deficit at halftime. His Cavaliers (2-3) managed to go in front 45-44 on a bucket from Damaris Heard for two of his 10 points.

It was the last time they held the lead.

“New Haven is a good team,” Wilson said. “They’re very well-disciplined and structured. They deserved to win tonight.”

New Haven held a 14-13 edge after the opening period.

Marquis Perkins and Ryan Crayton each scored 18 points for the Rockets. Navarra had 14 points to lead South Lake. Damone Tillman and Anthony Morgan both chipped in with 11 points.

It didn’t take long for Josh Mills to become a believer in New Haven’s stifling defensive system.

“It’s fun to play defense because defense creates offense,” said Mills, a first-year player in the Rockets’ program.

Mills scored several transition baskets on his way to a team-high 14 points in the New Haven’s 42-29 victory Friday against Detroit Denby in a semifinal game of the holiday tournament hosted by the Rockets. New Haven will play South Lake, a 64-62 overtime winner against Michigan Collegiate in the other semifinal, in the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“Every day we come in and do defensive drills,” Mills said. “We work on the ladder and we work on our footwork. We always practice help defense. You’ve got to help the helper all the time. That’s what our coach tells us and we just try to execute what he tells us.”

New Haven did a superb job of that against the Tars, who often seemed confused by the Rockets’ defensive pressure. Early in the second half, Denby had to burn a timeout because the player with the ball couldn’t find anyone open.

“We tried to keep the ball out of the point guard’s hands, number one,” Mills said. “Without him controlling the ball, they couldn’t do anything in their offense.”

New Haven led 14-12 at halftime, but the Rockets started the second half with a 16-1 run to open a 17-point lead. Mills and Josh Harris combined for nine of the 16 points.

Half of New Haven’s points during the spurt came off turnovers.

“We can’t score like we have in the past, but if we can hold teams down with our defense we should be fine,” said Rockets coach Tedaro France II. “This team has really bought into playing team defense. You could see it tonight. This group is one of the best defensive teams I’ve had in a long time.

“One thing about this group is they hustle. They don’t care about getting tired playing team defense. Sometimes kids want to keep something in reserve to score points but this group, from top to bottom, sells out on the defensive end. The offense will come. As a coach, it makes me smile to know that I have kids who buy into playing defense.”

France said that the first two weeks of practice are strictly defense.

“We don’t even touch a ball the first two weeks,” he said. “It’s all about learning our rotations and putting in our defensive packages. It’s not about scoring points. It’s about getting stops.”

Offenses can go into slumps, however, France expects his defense to be solid every night.

“It doesn’t take skill to play defense. It takes will and determination,” he said. “I tell my kids we should never have an off night on defense. The jump shot might be off some nights, the offensive skills might be sloppy, but we should always be sharp on defense and rebounding. Those are the two things that are the key ingredients to having a successful team.

“If you do those things great, the offense will come. You can score points off defense. You can score points off rebounding, but if you don’t take rebound and take pride in playing defense you won’t be successful.”

Denby ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run with all of the points coming off New Haven turnovers. The Rockets answered with eight straight points to start the fourth quarter, including Mills’ third 3-pointer of the game.

“My job is to knock down my open shots,” Mills said.

Harris led New Haven with nine rebounds, Jyaire Mack had six and Sychar Sterling grabbed five. Ryun Crayton tossed in seven points for the Rockets.

Nicholas Terry and Jakhal Thompson each scored seven points to lead Denby.

Denby 6 6 8 9 -- 29

New Haven 8 6 16 12 -- 42

DENBY (0-4): Nicholas Terry 7, Anthony King 2, Deangelo Walker 2, Cornelius Stevenson 1, Aaron Wheeler-White 3, Jaylen Lamar 2, Jakhal Thompson 7, Lorenzo Hodge 2, Hakeem Weatherspoon 2, Jamar Nolan 1. Totals: 10 (0) 9-17--29.

NEW HAVEN (3-0): Mike Kincaid 4, Ryun Crayton 7, Sychar Sterling 5, John Galloway 6, Jyaire Mack 2, Josh Mills 14, Josh Harris 4. Totals: 18 (4) 2-6--42.

SOUTH LAKE 64, MICHIGAN COLLEGIATE 62 (OT): South Lake jumped ahead early in the overtime and advanced to the championship game of the New Haven holiday tournament.

Anthony Morgan led the Cavaliers with 16 points and Damaris Heard added 14.

MARINE CITY – Jyaire Mack scored 14 points and Marquis Perkins added 13 as New Haven opened the high school boys basketball season with a 53-36 win over Marine City.

The Rockets (1-0) took control of the game by halftime and never looked back in the Macomb Area Conference crossover game.

“This is a great team win,” coach Tedaro France II said. “We have some good depth on our bench and we came together today and played good as a basketball team.”

France said was pleased with how his team was able to overcome the size of the Mariners’ post players and its defensive showing.

Clamping down on the Mariners’ shooters and holding them to under 40 points was a major accomplishment for the Rockets. The program is looking to reload after losing six players to graduation.

“We can have a bad offensive game, but we should never have a bad defensive game,” France said.

New Haven will play its second-straight road game against Almont on Tuesday.

Marine City (0-1), meanwhile, is just getting used to wearing its basketball shoes. The Mariners had about a week and a half to prepare for the matchup. Two weeks ago, its whole roster was on the turf at Ford Field winning the District 4 state football championship. The parades and banquets have kept them from putting in any significant time on the hardwood.

“Our offense will get better as the season goes on,” Marine City coach Joel Whymer said.

Pete Patsalis, one of the heroes in Marine City’s championship win, scored 14 points. The Mariners will face Algonac next Friday.

New Haven 6 14 12 21 – 53

Marine City 7 2 15 12 – 36

New Haven (1-0): Mike Kincaid 1, Ryan Crayton 5, Marquis Perkins 13, Max Jyaire 14, Josh Mills 7, Sychar Sterling 4, Marcus Jamison 4, John Galloway 5. Totals: 11 (6) 13-24 – 53.

Marine City (0-1): Alex Merchant 2, Cole Avers 1, Pete Patsalis 14, Jake Shemetaro 3, Paul Gorbani 9, Kenton Rivard 7. Totals: 10 (2) 10-19 – 36

COACH: Tedaro France II

OUTLOOK: Graduation hit New Haven's basketball team hard last June, however the Rockets' cupboard is far from bare at the start of a new season.

Gone are the six seniors who helped New Haven win 58 games over three seasons, two district championships and a regional title but coach Tedaro France II has five players returning with varsity experience.

The one returning starter is senior Sychar Sterling. He averaged 10.2 points and 11 rebounds per-game for the Rockets last season as they posted a 10-2 record in the MAC Gold and a 19-4 overall record. Sterling has also been the defensive stopper for New Haven.

France said that Sterling's role will expand this season.

"He's a natural leader," the coach said. "He's teaching the young kids how to win. He has improved his jump shot. We had him playing the post but now he can move out to the wing. He's going to play more of a scoring role for us than he has in the past."

Mike Kincaid and Ryun Crayton are a pair of senior guards who played key roles in the Rockets' success last season.

"Mike had some big games off the bench last year," France said. "He's a quick, smart guard who'll take over the point guard role. Ryun had some big games shooting the ball last year and he'll play at shooting guard."

John Galloway is a 6-foot-3 junior post player who got some playing time on the varsity last year. Another junior, Marcus Perkins, played eight games on the varsity and impressed with his hustle.

Three newcomers are in the mix for playing time. Josh Harris is 6-6 but athletic enough to play a wing. Josh Mills is a 6-1 guard who has good basketball skills. Senior Jyaire Mack didn't play last year but he is in the battle for quality minutes.

Brandon Gonzales was the leading scorer on the junior varsity last year and his offense will be a key this year.

"His shooting will help us extend teams on defense," France said.

Also up from the JV is 6-3 post player Marcus Jamison.

"We have more depth this year than we've had in the past," France said. "We have the luxury of being able to rest kids and we can play a pressure game. We'll play hard, work hard and play great team defense. That's what we've stressed at New Haven.

"There's a lot of competition for playing time. Other than Sychar, I don't know who's going to be in the starting five. We've got some tough decisions to make."

France expects the MAC Gold to be as rugged this season as it has been in recent years.

"There isn't one game in the division that you can count as a win," he said. "There isn't a better division in the MAC. We've won districts and a regional but we haven't won the division in the last three years. The division helps you prepare for the state tournament."
