New Haven makes depth pay off in win

New Haven's superstar wasn't quite super.

But the Rockets remained super, finding alternate forms of offense and fighting off Bridgeport, 78-72, for a Class B quarterfinal win Tuesday at Corunna.
"We're not a one-man team," New Haven coach Tedaro France said. "We're not just Romeo Weems. We have four players who average in double figures, so we have players to step in if someone is having a bad game."

New Haven star Romeo Weems struggles against Bridgeport defense

Weems, a 6-foot-7 junior, was the featured attraction, drawing the focus of the Bridgeport defense and Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. Weems, generally considered the front-runner for next season's Mr. Basketball award, scored just 13 points, making 3 of 10 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the line.

Instead, junior Ronald Jeffery took over, scoring 29 points to lead the undefeated Rockets to the Class B semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday against 23-2 Grand Rapids Catholic Central at Michigan State's Breslin Center.

New Haven had experience playing without Weems"We played most of the summer without Romeo," France said.

"Our other players gained confidence in playing without Romeo. And when Romeo came back, he came back with more confidence because we were basically adding him to what we had been playing with all summer."

Bridgeport cut lead to three points in fourth quarter

Despite the multiple offensive weapons, New Haven struggled to get past Bridgeport, which had not lost since the first game of the season. The Bearcats cut the Rockets' lead to three points several times during the fourth quarter, but Bridgeport couldn't get closer.

A 3-pointer by Charles Garrett with 10.7 seconds remaining cut the New Haven lead to 76-72, but Weems hit two free throws to put the game away.

Bridgeport creates havoc

"We heard all the talk about where is Bridgeport, what is Bridgeport," Bridgeport coach Kevin Marshall said. "We wanted to show them what we were. They weren't ready for the havoc. We want to keep the pressure up, force them to make mistakes.

"We average 25 steals a game. There's a reason for that."

Bridgeport pressure forced New Haven turnovers

France knew what was coming but couldn't prevent the turnovers.

"We had more turnovers tonight than we had all season combined," France said. "But that's a tough, scrappy team that never gives up. They create a lot of turnovers with their defense and pressure. I knew this was not going to be comfortable.

"I'm a football player. When I looked at their roster, I saw all those football players, and I knew what to expect. When you have football players on your team, they're going to be tough. They're never going to give up. They're going to scrap. They did all that. Bridgeport is an outstanding team."

Football attitude carries Bearcats

Nine of the 15 players on the basketball team played football for Marshall.

"To play football, you have to be a little crazy," Marshall said. "They bring an attitude. They scrap. They grind. I don't think New Haven was used to our toughness."

Bridgeport's Charles Garrett steals spot light

With Weems struggling, Bridgeport's Charles Garrett stole the show in front of Izzo. The Bridgeport senior scored 36 points with 10 rebounds, scoring 26 in the second half.

"People didn't believe in us," the 6-foot-3 senior said. "I hope people believe in us now. We were grinding it out, doing everything to win."

Garrett scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.

"He's a great, great player," France said. "He did everything. He put them on his back … just a tremendous player."

New Haven scoring leaders

Tavares Oliver Jr. also scored 13 points for the Rockets, who are the defending Class B state champions. Ascaun Johnson added 11 points before fouling out, with Ashton Sherrell scoring 10 points.

SirQuarius Ball also has a big game for Bridgeport

Bridgeport junior SirQuarius Ball scored 19 points with seven rebounds, with junior guard Markele Garrett hitting three 3-pointer for nine points. Kentae Parker added eight points for Bridgeport.

Bridgeport dream ends in quarterfinal

"This hurts," Marshall said. "I'm proud of these kids, of what they did for Bridgeport basketball. We knew we were going to have to wake up from our dream some time. We just didn't want it to wake up from our dream this early."

CORUNNA — The New Haven boys basketball team is only two victories shy of accomplishing all of its goals for the second consecutive year.

The Rockets (26-0) punched their ticket to the Breslin Center with a 78-72 Class B state quarterfinal victory over Bridgeport at Corunna High School on Tuesday night.

New Haven won its 52nd consecutive game behind its defense, a staple that has been part of the team’s DNA throughout its success.

"We got four guys that scored in double figures this year," New Haven coach Tedaro France II said. "It's not just the (Romeo) Weems show. He has the ability to make everyone else better. But when a guy isn't having a great game, we try to pick each other up.

"We rallied tonight against a scrappy team. They're tough. We turned it over more than we did all year. It wasn't our best game. But we stayed poised and made plays when we needed to, to pull out the victory."

New Haven advances to face Grand Rapids Catholic at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Benton Harbor and River Rogue play in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m.

Ronald Jeffrey III paced New Haven with a team-high 29 points, including 16 points in the first half. Romeo Weems added 13 points despite playing in foul trouble much of the game. Tavaras Oliver Jr. scored 13 points and Ascaun Johnson chipped in 11 for New Haven.

Charles Garrett scored 36 points to pace Bridgeport (24-2).

"I had to play through the foul trouble," Weems said. "I feel like I'm a target from refs and teams. I just have to keep playing and keep my head. I have to be the leader no matter what happens and keep everything under control."

New Haven led 17-11 after the first quarter and 36-26 at the end of the first half. The score began to tighten in the third quarter, as Weems picked up his fourth foul with the Rockets leading 40-35 with 5:17 left in the period.

But even with its best player on the bench, New Haven stayed in control and expanded the lead to 55-43 entering the fourth quarter.

"Coach always tells us in practice to play through everything," Oliver said. "Our offense wasn't that great so we relied on our defense.

"Especially when Romeo had to sub out. We picked it up and finished out the quarter."

In the fourth quarter, the Rockets stayed ahead behind several big plays, including a steal and layup from Weems that gave the Rockets a 71-64 lead with just over a minute to play.

CORUNNA >> New Haven is going back to the Breslin Center. But not without a fight.

Ronald Jeffery III scored 29 points to lead the foul-plagued Rockets to a 78-72 victory over Bridgeport in a Class B quarterfinal boys basketball game at Corunna on Tuesday night.

Tavares Oliver Jr. and Romeo Weems added 13 points apiece for New Haven (26-0), which will play Grand Rapids Catholic Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a state semifinal at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, where last year the Rockets won the second state crown in county history.

“I just went out and played hard,” Jeffery said. “We got into some foul trouble, and my teammates gave me the ball. They put me in a position to score some points.”

Junior Jamir Farrior made two free throws with 21.5 seconds left for a 75-68 lead and Weems added a free throw with 19.2 seconds left that put New Haven ahead 76-69 in a game that drew a capacity crowd, including Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.

Senior Charles Garrett scored 36 points and junior SirQuarius Ball 21 for Bridgeport (24-2).

The Rockets have won 52 games in a row.

“They showed me they had my back,” Weems said of his teammates, who weathered stretch after he went to the bench with four fouls and New Haven leading 43-37 with 3:46 left in the third quarter. “Offensively, I didn’t play too well. Ronald played his butt off, give him a lot of credit.

“He was going crazy tonight. It was probably the best game he’s had.”

Ascaun Johnson had consecutive field goals, the second a triple, to give New Haven a 69-59 lead with 2:20 left in the game.

Ball made two free throws to pull the Bearcats to within 62-59 with 4:28 left in the game.

That was the closest the Tri-Valley Conference champions had been in some time against the defending state champions.

Fouls started to mount against New Haven in the third quarter.

Weems was whistled for his third and fourth fouls and Sherrell his third.

Jeffery made a pair of 3-pointers, one from each corner, and Johnson stole the ball and drove for a layup as the Rockets built a 48-41 lead.

Ashton Sherrell sank a free throw with 1:09 left in the quarter for a 50-41 lead.

And Jeffery wasn’t finished.
His triple with 24 seconds left in the quarter put New Haven ahead 53-43, and Oliver added two free throws a moment later for the 55-43 lead the Rockets took into the fourth.

Weems returned to the game and sank a triple for a 58-47 lead with 7:05 to play.

After Bridgeport cut the lead to 60-54, Jeffery turned playmaker with an assist to Sherrell, whose bucket gave New Haven a 62-54 lead with five minutes to play.

Jeffery scored 14 points and Oliver 11 to help New Haven build a 36-26 halftime lead.

Bridgeport led 7-2 in the first 1:23 of the game, but Jeffery had the Rockets’ first eight points of the game and helped the MAC Blue Division champions build a 17-13 by the end of an opening quarter that also featured seven points from Oliver.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central (23-2) advanced with a 65-43 victory over Boyne City.

Benton Harbor (25-1) plays River Rouge (23-1) in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

CLASS A: De La Salle reaches semifinals with victory over U-D Jesuit.

Great victory tonight over a tough, athletic & scrappy Bridgeport team 78-72. Proud of our boys and the grit they showed while overcoming adversity. Boys stayed together, stepped up and made plays. Not a pretty game but win and move on #BreslinBound

New Haven to meet Bridgeport in basketball quarterfinal

George Pohly, The Macomb Daily

The basketball went out of bounds, it belonged to Detroit Country Day, and Tedaro France looked the other way.

“I turned my back,” the New Haven boys coach said. “I was looking at the other end of the court, at how our defense was setting up.”

The ball never got to the Country Day forecourt.

As a Yellowjacket made a pass inbounds, Romeo Weems slithered between the ball and its intended target.

The 6-foot-7 junior’s steal and subsequent basket gave New Haven an 83-73 lead with 1:39 left in the fourth quarter, and the Rockets, who had suddenly looked wobbly after leading by 22 points in the third quarter, stopped a Country Day surge on the way to a 92-74 victory in a Class B regional championship game.

“That kind of shifted the momentum,” France said following the March 14 game. “It was a huge play by a smart player.”

New Haven’s fourth consecutive regional championship was the product of heady, clutch plays by Weems and his supporting cast against a young but gritty team from the Beverly Hills school.

That’s what the Rockets have come to expect on a journey they hope takes them to a second consecutive state championship.

“Guys stepped up and made plays,” France said after New Haven pushed its winning streak to 51 games. “These kids have stayed together. They don’t care who’s scoring points. We take it one day at a time.”

Detroit Country Day, winner of nine state championships, refused to wilt after New Haven’s 27-11 second quarter left the Rockets with a 51-33 halftime lead.

“The farther we go, the harder the teams are to play,” senior guard Tavares Oliver Jr. said.

New Haven takes a 25-0 record against Bridgeport (24-1) in a state quarterfinal game that starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Corunna.

The Bearcats, led by 6-3 Charles Garrett, who averages 20.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, won the Tri-Valley Conference championship.

Their season resume includes a regular-season victory over Flint Beecher (a team New Haven also defeated) and a regional-final triumph over Flint Powers Catholic.

Markele Garrett averages 13.8 points and 6-5 SirQuarius Ball scores 16.9 points and grabs 7.9 rebounds for the school that’s located near Frankenmuth.

New Haven got key contributions from several players against Country Day.

Ronald Jeffery III scored 22 points; Oliver and Weems had 19 apiece, and Ashton Sherrell 17. Weems posted a quadruple double that included 16 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals. He also had seven blocked shots.

Ascaun Johnson played significant minutes after Sherrell got into foul trouble.

Seldom-used guard De’Von Hicks and forward Malen Lewis had an assist apiece while they played because fouls piled up on teammates.

That pleased France.

“We always tell the kids, ‘Be great at your role. When your number is called, step in. You might not get a stat, but you’ve got to do your job,’” France said.

Four Rockets have double-figure scoring averages.

Weems, the target of an intense national recruiting derby, is a primary reason for that, France said.

“He makes everyone around him better,” France said. “He can pass the ball so well. His presence, the stuff he does, is impressive. Kids love to play with him because he gets kids involved.

“He defends, too. And as hard as he plays in the games, he plays that hard each day in practice.”

The winner of the New Haven-Bridgeport game plays the winner of the Grand Rapids Catholic Central-Boyne City quarterfinal in a state semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Breslin Center. GRCC and Boyne City play at Big Rapids.

In the other quarterfinals, Benton Harbor takes on Williamston at Ionia, and Dearborn Divine Child plays River Rouge at Chelsea. Winners of those games play at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Breslin Center.

New Haven set to defend Class B basketball title

They are the champions.

They are also riding a 51 game win streak.

The New Haven Rockets (25-0) enter the biggest week of the season playing their best basketball and having a real shot to capture three more wins this week for their second consecutive state championship.

But according to New Haven coach Tedaro France II, this Rockets team hasn't accomplished anything yet.

That's why they enter Tuesday's 7 p.m. Class B state quarterfinal against Bridgeport at Corunna High School, hungry and motivated to prove themselves.

"Every year is different," France II said. "This year, we haven't won a state championship. That was last year. We have to come out and work hard day in and day out to win a state championship.

"We can't just say we did it before so it will happen again. You have to work for it."

New Haven advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating St. Clair and Detroit Country Day last week in regional play. Now the Rockets biggest test lies ahead.

They will face a Bridgeport (24-1) team with only one blemish on its record. The Rockets will have to continue playing at a high level to be ready for the challenge; and as always, they will rely on their defense to lead the way.

"We can always count on our defense," New Haven junior Romeo Weems said. "Even when the shots aren't going in, we can still defend. We play defense and it gets our offense going."

The Rockets defensive pressure has often allowed them to capture the momentum by forcing turnovers and turning them into transition points.

That will be the strategy once more against a Bridgeport team that defeated Flint Powers, 86-72. But the Rockets will also have to take care of the ball and limit their own mistakes so Powers isn't able to wrestle control of the game.

"We got into foul trouble and some guys stepped in and helped us," France II ."In games like this, I tell kids that don't play that much to be ready. They were ready. I tell our guys to be ready to play your role.

"I don't care if you make 12 mistakes. Just don't make the same one twice and don't dwell. If they make a mistake they aren't going to get subbed out. They don't have to feel down. They just have to continue playing."

New Haven standout Romeo Weems did some Weems-esque things on Wednesday in the regional finals.

The winter season for high school sports is coming to a close. Boys and girls basketball playoffs are ongoing as we speak; the former now down to the final eight teams in each of the four classes.

Among the teams to have reached the quarterfinals, which begin on March 20, are the Rockets of New Haven in Class B. The defending state champions are led by prep star Romeo Weems, who is regarded as Michigan’s top prep player from the Class of 2019.

Weems and New Haven picked up yet another win on Wednesday in the regional final round, an impressive 92-74 win over Detroit Country Day for a fourth straight regional championship. In that game, the 4-star prospect turned in a quadruple-double — 21 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals. And for good measure, he added seven blocks to the stat sheet.

Freep Sports✔@freepsports Romeo Weems' quadruple double helps New Haven notch 51st straight win
Romeo Weems' quadruple double helps New Haven notch 51st straight win New Haven’s Romeo Weems proved that he can fill up any stat column in Wednesday’s regional semifinal victory over Detroit Country Day.

“People just see that he’s a great player, but they don’t see how hard he works,” said France. “He’s a great teammate, he gets better everyday, but the thing about him is that he’s a great leader.”

The victory for New Haven was their 51st consecutive victory going back to last season. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that he is a man amongst boys at the high school level. But the scientist behind this group of Rockets, head coach Tedaro France, lauds him for his versatility.

“One thing he does is make his teammates better. Four guys are averaging double figures this whole year. Kids love playing with him because he shares the ball and creates shots.”

“It’s a blessing to coach a player of that caliber, and still be so humble, and have such great character.”

France said the biggest thing that has helped fuel their 50+ straight decisions in the win column is matching the pregame prep for every contest during that stretch. He also added that having a player of Weems’ caliber makes everything easier because he “gets (his teammates) involved and they feed off his energy.”

Weems (6-7, 215 pounds) is listed as the No. 1 junior hoops player in the state, per the 247Sports Composite. He’s already received a plethora of scholarship offers going back to his sophomore season. Both Michigan and Michigan State have offered him; he’s the highest-rated target from the Class of 2019 for Michigan and among the highest for MSU. The state’s two Division I mid-majors — Oakland and Detroit Mercy — have also offered him a scholarship.

Weems has been connected to MSU for some time now, Spartans head coach Tom Izzo has visited him on multiple occasions, and he’s made many trips to East Lansing throughout his prep career. The Spartans formally offered the New Haven standout back on January 30 of last year. However, the Wolverines and a host of others remain hot on MSU’s trail, vying for his services.

You can see Weems and New Haven next on Tuesday, March 20 when the quarterfinals get underway across the state. The Rockets will square off with Bridgeport (24-1) at Corunna High School. The game will be on MHSAA.TV as well.

Chris Allen, Special to the Free Press

New Haven’s Romeo Weems proved that he can fill up any (and almost every) stat column in Wednesday’s regional semifinal victory over Detroit Country Day.

The junior forward recorded an eye-popping quadruple double, stuffing the statsheet with 21 points, 16 rebounds, 12 assists, 10 steals and seven blocks, nearly cinching an ultra-rare quintuple double.

“He can do everything, he rebounds, he steals, he defends.” Coach Tedaro France said about the star forward.

“People just see that he’s a great player, but they don’t see how hard he works,” said France. “He’s a great teammate, he gets better everyday, but the thing about him is that he’s a great leader.”

“One thinghe does is make his teammates better. Four guys are averaging double figures this whole year. Kids love playing with him because he shares the ball and creates shots.”

Weems was joined in double-figures scoring by three teammates. Ronald Jefferey led New Haven with 22 points. Tavares Oliver scored 19 points, and Ashton Sherrell added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Coach France commended Weems’ unselfish style of play as a key factor in New Haven’s success.

“How he plays, he gets them involved and they feed off his energy.”

“It’s a blessing to coach a player of that caliber, and still be so humble, and have such great character.”

The victory over Detroit Country Day marks New Haven’s 51st consecutive victory, dating back to last season.

“Fifty-one consecutive games, we prepped each day the same way. We prepared for this game the same way we would prepare against the last place team in our league.”

“Win the day,” France said. “That’s our team motto. We want to win each day, and we want to get better.”

Despite Country Day’s Julian Roper leading all scorers with 25 points, New Haven came out on top, crowned regional champs for the fourth year in a row.

“I’m so proud of our team and their hard work. They’re unselfish, great teammates, and it’s an honor to coach such great young men, and to have the opportunity to teach life lessons through the game of basketball.”

The Rockets will go for 52 straight wins in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday at Corunna against Bridgeport (24-1) at 7 p.m.
